Hayden was sitting beside the radio, listening to updates regarding the war when Dr. Stolly woke up and made his way out of his room. The two men were situated in the small cottage belonging to the Sharp family. Dr. Stolly had the smaller room in the front, while Hayden took the master bedroom in the back. Dr. Stolly’s hair was sticking up in all different ways and he rubbed the sleep from behind his glasses. It took him a second to notice Hayden after hearing the radio. He took notice of Hayden’s sandy blond hair, still neatly combed through, and frowned.

“Did you sleep at all?” he asked.

Hayden shook his head. His eyes remained on the radio for a moment longer.

“I feel like I should be doing more. Now that I can, now that I can help...” his voice trailed off.

Dr. Stolly turned the radio off. He glanced down at Hayden, who didn’t move. Instead, his eyes shifted to look out the window.

“It’d be foolish to send you in before you’re ready, Sergeant.”

Hayden nodded once before looking down. He picked at his thumb, crossed his arms, and sat back in the chair.

“You can call me Hayden, you know.”

“Would that make us friends?” Dr. Stolly asked.

“Aren’t we?”

Dr. Stolly furrowed his eyebrows for a second and nodded. There were few people either of the two men really trusted, and in times of war, it was better to have friends one could rely on. Hayden looked back at the window.

“I spent last night setting up a few dummies out back.” Using his thumb, Dr. Stolly acknowledged the backyard over his shoulder.

“So how come you aren’t standing outside?”

Dr. Stolly stood there with his jaw hanging, taken aback by his friend’s remark. Hayden smiled. Dr. Stolly scowled and rolled his eyes.

“Anyway,” he continued, “we’ll see how you are with the whip.”

“I can use a whip—but how do I turn it into a sword?”

Dr. Stolly shrugged.

“There wasn’t really mention of that in the journals, so I’m not going to be much help with that, I’m afraid. You’re just gonna have to figure it out.” Dr. Stolly ran his fingers through his messy hair. “I’m going to go get changed. Go get Marfóir and I’ll meet you out back in half an hour?”

Hayden nodded, and Dr. Stolly excused himself.

He looked over his shoulder as Dr. Stolly closed the bathroom door before turning back to face the radio. There were so many things happening around the world; people dying, a war raging. But looking out of the window, it looked like just another day. Hayden inhaled deeply and got to his feet. He rolled up the sleeves of his white button-up shirt to his elbows and went to his room.

Marfóir remained nestled in the box it had been given to him in. Hayden took off the lid and placed it down beside the box as he took a moment to examine the spine whip. His fingers gently grazed against each
